From frontier beginnings to the 1920s oil boom, Breckenridge’s history is told through landmarks like the Swenson Memorial Museum, downtown murals, and the 1926 Stephens County Courthouse — each offering a glimpse into the people and events that shaped this Texas town.

Location

  • Swenson Memorial Museum & J.D. Sandefer Oil Annex – 116 W. Walker Street; housed in historic bank building; pioneer artifacts + oil boom exhibits. 

  • Stephens County Courthouse – downtown; Classical Revival architecture built in 1926. 

  • Murals & Oil Derrick – murals around town memorialize the boom era; a non-working oil derrick in the downtown area marks the oil heritage.

  • Stephens County Courthouse & Murals
    Outdoor and public viewings available daily (sunrise to sunset)
